On the occasion of its 28th anniversary of its establishment as of 2006, Gallery Yeh is going to open an exhibition under the title of ‘The Great Artists of Modern Art in Korea’ (subtitle: Into the Aura _ Attractiveness of Great Artists), with a focus on the works of great artists who have represented the true and real artistic spirit of Koreans. Since its foundation in 1978, the gallery has hosted 7-8 planned exhibitions and invitation exhibitions at home and abroad each year and consistently participated in large-scale international art exhibitions so as to contribute to the development of art and culture and the internationalization of art and to foster young and promising artists.
In December 2005, the gallery moved to its current residence, whose exhibition spaces are favored by many artistic enthusiasts and the cultural and artistic circles. 28-year old Gallery Yeh plans to host this exhibition for great artists selected from the Korean art circles in order to suggest future directions of Korean art and make a hopeful turning point of Korean art. Participants in the exhibition are all the most influential figures in Korea modern art in the 20th century such as Bon Ung Gu, Ok Yeon Gwon, Gyeong Seung Kim, Hyeong Geun Kim, Gwan Nam, Sang Bong Do, Shin Mun, Chang Don Park, Jong Ha Byeon, Ji ho Oh, Yeong Guk Yu, Dae Won Lee, Jik Sun Im, and Uk Jin Jang. They are really great artists who have paid the foundation of Korea modern art and bridged new Western artistic trends with Korean traditions.
Among the works put on this exhibition, a 40-size undisclosed work of Ok Yeon Gwon entitled A Scene of Paris well expresses the sentimental informel the artist is pursuing after and it may be deemed as the best work of the artist that shall incite delicate changes based on blue-gray, dark-gray, and gree-gray colors and even instigate unique literary emotion. A work of Uk Jin Jang called Children Within the Village keeps intact the simple mind of the artist who loves plain scenerary since it graphically describes the innocence of children. The exhibition also invites other leading Korean artists who have been deeply influenced by this age when rich soil for art has been established and who have been very active at home and abroad: Hun Gwak, Wung Kim, Won Suk Kim, Jong Hak Kim, Byeong Uk Park, Jeong Hye Bae, Su Nam Song, Jae Hyeon Shim, Se Yeol Oh, Cheon Ryong Oh, Gang So Lee, Yeong Hak Lee, Cheong Un Lee, Yeong Ja Jo, Jeong Hee Hong, and Yeong Seong Hwang. These are such artists as are involved in direct and/or indirect international art exhange and propagate in the clearest way and their own manner the characteristics of Korea modern art among various tendencies of world modern art.
All of the truly great artists invited to the exhibition have maintained good relationship with Gallery Yeh for 28 years and taken their sure position in Korea modern art. These great geniuses’ superior works will definitely enable the appreciators to understand the high level of Korea modern art and foresee a new possibility of the art. Visitors shall have a relatively clear grasp of an overall tencency in Korea modern art and of the participating artists’ originality and community and more truly comprehend the subtitle: Into the Aura _ Attractiveness of Great Artists. This exhibition will be a good opportunity to catch the aesthetic taste unique to Koreans and the features of Korea modern art.

예화랑은 2006년 28주년을 기념, 우리의 미술 문화 속 깊이 자리하고 있는 예술의 진정한 혼이 살아 숨쉬는 거장들의 작품에 초점을 맞춘 전시 ‘The great Artist of modern art_ 한국 현대 미술의 위대한 거장展’(부제:‘Into the Aura_거장의 매력) 를 선보이고자 합니다. 1978년에 개관한 이래 국내외에 걸쳐 매년 7-8여 회의 기획전시, 초대전을 비롯 대규모 국제 미술전 참가를 통해 미술문화의 발전과 미술 국제화를 위한 노력을 계속해왔으며, 젊고 역량있는 작가의 발굴도 함께 실현해 왔습니다.
지난 해 2005년 12월에는 건축적 의미를 담고 있는 지금의 새로운 공간으로 이동, 많은 미술 애호가 뿐만 아니라 문화 예술계의 주목을 받는 도심속 문화 공간으로 거듭났습니다. 28년이란 적지 않은 이 시간동안 한국 현대미술과 함께 지나온 예화랑의 이번 전시는 한국 미술계의 거장 들을 선정, 우리 한국 미술이 나아가야 할 방향제시와 더불어 희망찬 한국미술의 전환의 계기를 만들고자 하는 의도에서 전시를 기획하게 된 것 입니다. 20세기 한국 현대미술에 있어서 커다란 발자취를 남기신 구본웅, 권옥연, 김경승, 김형근, 남 관, 도상봉, 문 신, 박창돈, 변종하, 오지호, 유영국, 이대원, 임직순, 장욱진 선생님으로 이 분들은 한국현대미술의 정초를 닦으시고 새로운 서구 미술사조와 한국적 전통 사이의 다리를 놓으신 역할을 담당해오셨던 한국 현대미술의 진정한 거장이라 말 할 수 있는 분들이십니다.
이번 전시, 권옥연 선생님의 40호 크기 미공개작 [파리풍경]은 작가가 추구한 정적인 엥포르멜을 잘 표현하고 있으면서 청회색, 암회색, 녹회색을 기조로 하는 미묘한 변화와 독특한 문학적 감상마저 불러일으키는 선생님의 최고의 작품이라 해도 과언이 아닐 것입니다. 또한 어린아이의 마음을 빌려 천진난만한 동심의 세계를 그대로 옮겨 놓은 듯한 소재로 소박한 풍경을 사랑했던 작가 장욱진 선생님의 작품 [마을 안 아이들]은 순수한 그의 마음을 고스란히 담고 있는 작품 입니다. 이 세대로부터 깊은 영향을 받고 비교적 비옥한 토양이 일구어진 시기에 국내·외 미술무대에서 왕성하게 활동해온 곽 훈, 김 웅, 김원숙, 김종학, 박병욱, 배정혜, 송수남, 심재현, 오세열, 오천룡, 이강소, 이영학, 이청운, 조영자, 홍정희, 황영성 선생님 등 이른바 현재 한국미술계의 중진으로 자리하고 계신 분들 또한 한 자리에 모셨습니다. 이 분들은 직, 간접적으로 국제미술무대의 교류를 통해 세계 현대미술의 조류 속에서 한국 현대미술의 특징을 개별적인 양상으로 가장 잘 표현하고 계신 분들입니다.
한국 현대미술의 진정한 거장들의 작업세계를 한 자리에 모아본 이번 전시회에 초대된 작가분 들은 28년 동안 예화랑과 인연을 맺어온 동시에 한결같이 한국화단에 있어서 확고한 위치와 작품세계를 구축하신 분들입니다. 우리 현대미술의 가장 높은 수준을 가늠케 해주는 선생님들의 작품들은 우리 미술의 새로운 가능성을 점검하게 하는 직접적인 매개체 역할을 해줄 것입니다. 거장들의 작품을 통해서 전체적인 한국 현대미술의 흐름을 비교적 선명하게 파악하고 전시 관람시 작가 개개인의 개별적인 독창성과 동시에 서로를 은연중 묶어주는 공유성 또한 감지함으로 부제: Into the Aura_거장의 매력’을 더 실감나게 느낄 수 있을 것입니다. 어쩌면 그를 통해 한국인의 고유한 미적 감성과 한국 현대미술의 특징들을 점검해볼 수 있는 좋은 자리가 될 것입니다.
