When it comes to Korean abstract art, Youngkook You is a pioneering artist who mainly focuses on the theme of mountains in his work.   유영국은 한국 추상미술의 선구자이다. 일본 유학시절(1935∼1945)에는 구성주의에 가까운 추상미술을 시도하여 1938년에는 일본의 대표적 전위미술가 단체전인 자유미술가협회전(自由美術家協會展)에서 최우수상을 수상하였다. 광복 후에는 신사실파(新事實派), 모던아트협회 창립멤버로서 한국의 모더니즘 미술을 리드하면서 ‘산’을 모티브로 하여 선, 면, 색채로 구성된 비구상적 형태로서의 자연을 탐구하였다. 강렬한 원색과 기하학적 패턴의 면 분할, 구축적이고 절제된 구성을 특징으로 하는 유영국의 기하학적 추상화에는 장대한 자연의 숭고미가 응축되어 있다.
